If the 1950s cracked popular music open, the 1960s decided what was going to pour out. This is the decade rock became the dominant commercial force in the list, and the decade soul stopped being a niche and started being the mainstream.
Rock is the largest genre in this category by a clear margin, and that shift is the single biggest story of the decade. Ten years earlier it barely existed as a category. By 1969 it was the default assumption about what a band was, what it looked like, and what it was for.
Two engines drove that. The first was British. A generation of young men in Liverpool, London and Newcastle had spent the late fifties obsessively collecting American blues and R&B records, learning them, and then playing them back to America slightly wrong in a way that turned out to be thrilling. The commercial consequences were staggering and permanent. It also established a template that lasted decades: four or five players, guitars, their own songs, an identity as a group rather than a backing band behind a star.
The second engine was in Detroit. Soul is the third-largest genre here and its presence reflects something more than a change in taste. Motown was a genuine industrial operation, built with a house band, staff songwriters, and a quality control process that would not have looked out of place in a car plant. It also did something the previous decade had circled without landing: it put Black artists in front of a mass white audience without disguising them, without covers, and on their own terms.
Southern soul was doing something adjacent and rawer at the same time. Between them, they gave the decade a body of work that has never really gone out of fashion, which is why so many of these acts remain instantly recognisable sixty years later.
The other quiet revolution was in format. For most of pop history, an album was somewhere to put the hit single and some filler. Across the second half of this decade it became a thing in itself: sequenced, conceived as a whole, and increasingly the unit artists cared about most. Studio technology got dramatically better at the same moment, and suddenly a record could contain sounds that no group could reproduce on a stage.
That change is why the back half of this list feels so different from the front. Folk went electric, pop got strange, and a decade that opened with two-minute singles closed with side-long experiments.

10 of these acts carry a Q, X, Z or J somewhere in the name, which is 10 percent of the category. If one of those turns up on your board, you have narrowed the field enormously before you have decoded anything else. Start there.
This decade is thick with band names starting with "The", which is genuinely useful. If you spot the letters for THE sitting in the pile, pull them out and work on what is left. You are usually looking at a much shorter word than the board first suggests.
